Welcome to the New Year!

You may want to sit down for this.

Great. I love it when doctors say that.

I’m sorry, Kelly. But you’ve got a very serious problem.

Oh no, what is it?

You’re just eating too healthfully.

Excuse me?

Too many vegetables, too much fruit, and too many whole grains. Stop. You’re giving your stomach nightmares and a too heathy fourteen year old is weirding everyone out.

No. I am not making this up.

My diet is just too healthy. I think I may be the only fourteen year old girl who has ever had this problem. Ever.

Now unfortunately, we don’t know that my diet is the only thing causing issues. But issues, I do have. Ever since I lost my weight, I’ve been having some health problems. Low energy level, going to the bathroom a lot, stomach pain, bloating, etc.

You know. Fun stuff.

We think it might have something to do with my diet, but we’re not sure. I love to eat this way. My food is delicious and healthy, but my body isn’t on top of the world like I feel it should be. I’ve had blood work done, and, apparently, I’m the picture of health. My poor mother has had so much to deal with that I couldn’t possibly mind that my minor problems haven’t been checked in to, but now that her radiation is OVER, we can look into this stuff.

So I’ve got some random other tests, but, being a food blogger, you’d think that I’d be able to tackle the food end of it. So I’m going to give it a shot.

I’m fourteen, 5′ 4″,about 124 bs, and about 19% body fat. Here’s what my current diet + exercise looks like:

Food:

~1800-2000 calories a day (as recommended by my RD)

lot of fruits and veggies

lots of whole grains

40-50 grams of protein per day

<25 grams soy protein per day

Exercise:

5 days per week

running/walking (1.5-3.5 miles)

biking

tae bo (occasionally)

general moving round and lugging lots of heavy books

Sounds good right? But not everything that sound good in theory is as good in actuality. Have you noticed this? Especially in your diet/exercise?

So I was looking at Ashley’s detox, and I figured, if she can figure out that gluten was bothering her, why can’t I figure out what’s bothering me? I am willing to play around with my diet. If I have to go gluten free, so be it. If I have to give up soy (but I love you tempeh!), I think I will live.

It’s a new year. It’s a clean slate for all of us. (More on this later.)

Have you had issues with your diet? Maybe even unexpected ones? How did you overcome them? Any ideas for me? Thanks and a very Happy New Year to you and your families!

Enjoy!

-Kelly M.

you strike me as a perfectionist. ;) thanks for constantly reminding me about your age. your writing is often so compelling that i forget! when i began reading this article, i thought you were talking about your 14-year old daughter! and by the way, i was Bulimic for 79 percent of your existence. it makes me happy that we're networking and that my information is getting to the young fabulous girls of society. happy new year! with deep admiration, the exbulimic & puggle :) xxx

I can totally relate. I've been a "healthy eater" since I was about 14/15, and everyone thought it was weird. I'm vegan, and although my friends thought it was a little weird at first, that was nothing some delicious vegan cookies couldn't cure. Anyway, I originally transitioned from vegetarian to vegan because I found that dairy just wasn't serving my body anymore. I had a lot of similar symptoms to what you mentioned. After that, it was great. However, I had some random digestion issues, but that's because IBS runs strongly in my family. I finally identified gluten as the culprit (thanks to Ashley, actually; I had never thought of it before that) and now have TONS of energy. Good luck to you! If you have any questions or want to chat, I'd love to talk to you. I love talking with other teens, especially since I can relate to your story. My first doctor thought I was crazyyyy because I live a pretty healthy life. Now I have a doctor that really works with me and looks at things holistically. It's all good :).

Ahh I don't even want to talk about what I've gone through with eating. It's a mess. Too healthy, not enough, not healthy enough... gah I'm all over the place! Good luck figuring out what works for you! It sounds like you have the right mindset too, so I think you'll tackle your diet challenge really well.

I have had so many food issues.. I'm lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, and allergic to apples, raspberries, and peanuts (which is really new). It's so relieving fixing the problem though! Once I eliminated gluten from my diet, I suddenly felt SO MUCH better and feeling so much better made me not miss it. Plus, there's lots of great substitutes. I hope you figure out your food issues, and I'm glad that your mom is out of radiation!! Happy 2012!

Hmmm... I am not any sort of nutrition expert but it seems like you're a normal weight for your height, and your exercise does not seem excessive compared to your calorie intake so... I am stumped! Maybe your body is still adjusting to such rapid changes? No idea. I'm so glad to hear about your mom though! I hope everything continues to go well :)

I am probably late to join the party here, and it looks like you've already cut out grains for a bit to give it a shot -but I recently went through a very similar thing. I went vegan (whole foods - with a heavy emphasis on veggies and fruits) and exercised every day and all of a sudden, I was gaining weight and feeling like garbage. I've been off all grains for 2 weeks now, and I feel so much better!!!!!! I've lost 8 lbs, and I just feel a lot more clear headed and energetic. Needless to say, I was SO excited to find your recent recipes with coconut flour and have pinned many of them already. :) Good luck in your journey to better health! I hope you find the solution that works best for you. I'm so excited to follow your blog!

Thank you SO much for sharing your story! I can't tell you how much I loved reading it. It's great to feel you're not alone isn't it? It just seemed so strange! I felt like I should be the picture of health, but felt like (you put this very well!) garbage. I simply tried going low carb, and I just felt so much better! Who knew? I love making low carb recipes, because we should still be able to eat tasty things and not fele like garbage. If you ever want to talk about ANYTHING, just email me at foodiefiasco@gmail.com. I hope you have a lovely day!
