The Comment Quandry

By Kelly M 42 Comments Jump to Recipe

This is a very awkward post for me to write.

If you are offended or put off in the post slightest by it, I sincerely apologize. But I need your help.

If you are a human being reading these very words, I am forever grateful to you. You have no idea how much I care about you, my friend, and how thankful I am that you read what I write. You an amazing person, and you will never know how much you mean to me. Thank you so much.

Unfortunately, something happened on my last post that hasn’t happened since the early days of Foodie Fiasco. That post didn’t get a single comment. Not one.

Forgive me if this sounds conceited, self-entitled, and like I’m overreacting, but the inherent lack of comments really spoke to me. I was very disappointed. Up until a month and a half ago, I was getting twenty some comments on almost every post. Now, I’m lucky if I get two or three.

Oddly enough, Foodie Fiasco’s traffic has been going up, but the amount of comments is plummeting. I am so thrilled that more and more wonderful people (like you!)  are coming to check out my humble abode, but I don’t know why I’m not getting nearly as many comments.

Please be honest: I am getting boring? I’m really very sorry if I am. I value your time so much,  I know how busy you are, and the least I can do is give you the best content I possibly can. Am I really getting boring?

I honestly do work very hard on each and every one of my posts, including my last one. Between recipe testing, photographing, photo editing, writing… hours go into every post. I put in my best effort to give you what you deserve: the best.

Of course, I do blog for myself too, but I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t care how many people read my blog or how many comments I get. But I think I speak for all bloggers when I say that I want to helps spread my message and content to as many people as I can. When my comments go down, I can’t help but feeling that I’m not doing something right. It feels like my content isn’t worth commenting on.

I could easily be overreacting. I probably am. And I apologize again if you think his post is out of line, or if you are put off. I am so thankful for and care about you, my friends, so much. Thank you for being there for me.

Why do you think my comments are going down? Has something like this happened to you? Do you think comments will come back? Thanks so much for your input and friendship, and I hope you have a lovely day!

Enjoy!

-Kelly M.

Your blog is awesome, personally I'm a lazy bum that's why I don't comment very often haha.

I love your blog, read every post. However, I think this is the first time I have commented. I get the uncertainty when there were no comments, I am starting my own blog now and know that I will feel the same way when I launch it. Wish I could speak for everyone but I know I read and will continue to read (and comment!) on your blog.

I'm a reader, and only really comment when I have something really good to say...which isn't often. Keep it up--your blog is great. :-) Just make sure you are writing for the pure joy of it, not just to please others...the comments will follow. I read every one of your posts. Just so ya know ;-)

Thank you so much, Coco! And that is great advice. I really do blog for the joy of it, but it's just added joy for me when other people are helped by it, too. ;)

Hi Kelly, I only recently started reading your blog, and very rarely comment on anything I read - but I realized that for me, the biggest reason is simply Google Reader, which does not allow an easy platform for commenting. You are not boring at all!

I don't think your content is getting boring. And I pin almost every one of your recipes on Pinterest so I can find them easily and try them when I have time. :) I usually don't comment because I'm lazy. But I DO love your posts and am glad I found your blog. :) Keep it coming. You've got an entertaining way of writing, and your recipes are awesome!

    1. If you're blogging for comments, you're doing it wrong. 2. Do you really NEED 20 ''OMG I need to try that recipe'' comments to keep you blogging? 3. Personally, I would much rather have 1 thoughtful or constructive comment (even negative) than tons of ''Yummy!'' type of comments. 4. This is not meant to be harsh. :)

      1. I know. I really don't blog for comments but, I do appreciate them. 2. You're completely right! I don't need that, and felt badly about it soon after I hit "publish" on ths post. 3. I think that's a really great way to think about it. Having people actually absorb what you're saying and then contributing something thoughtful (like you're doing!) is priceless. 4. It wasn't taken as harsh. Thank you so much for your thoughts!

I absolutely love your recipes, and you are not getting boring! Honestly I agree with the two comments above me - I comment when I have something good to say, or I am just lazy. A lot of times I just read blogs all day and not comment on any. It has nothing to do with you, you are doing an amazing job ! :)

You are not obligated to comment AL ALL, but I am so thrilled you still read me. I think I'm guily of comment-less reading, too! I haven't been commenting much on your blog lately, have I?

I am not sure why you are getting less comments in general- I can tell you my recent lack of commenting is half insane busy-ness and half that there's a lot of coconut flour in your recipes recently and I hate coconut and I don't like to comment on recipes I'm positive I'll never make...but the rest of the world loves coconut everything so use to your heart's content!

And plus, I haven't been commenting much on your blog lately, have I? So I know how half insane busy-ness goes... Oh, I wanted to tell you that I'm going on my first audition tomorrow. Got any advice for me? Thanks so much, Ellen!

That's so exciting you have an audition! My advice probably varies depending on what sort of thing you te auditioning for, whether they have you anything to prepare in advance or it is a cold-reading, play or film, etc. my most basic advice is to try to have fun, pretend they already cast you in the role so you have nothing to worry about, but I'd you want shoot me an email at scrumptiousgruel.ellen@gmail.com and we could chat more and I could try to be to be more helpful...

I don't read blogs everyday, so I usually only comment on the most recent post when I do comment. I look at all of them since I'm subscribed, but I don't feel the need to comment on every single one to show that. Don't doubt yourself - your recipes are awesome. I can understand how you might get less comments though with recipes because sometimes there isn't much else to say besides "that looks sooooo good!". I'm sorry this is getting you down, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Have you looked at comments vs. views? I'll full-out admit that my views took a dip in the previous months, though it's coming back up. Comments seem to be a bit low, too. I have this theory that people are disengaging from blogs slightly, myself included. That doesn't mean I don't read... just maybe not as frequently... and sometimes I don't have anything good to say or time to think of something good to say. I'm pretty sure if you ask other bloggers, they will tell you the same thing. Hope that gives another point-of-view.

I realize that I'm guilty of comment-less reading, too! I really haven't been commenting on your blog much lately, have I? I'm sorry for that! Well, anyway, thanks so much again Julie, and I hope you have a lovely day! ;)

One thing that may have lead to an uptick and then a downtick (is that a word) in comments was that I am pretty sure I read about your blog on another well-known national food blog (I can't remember at the moment which one). That probably brought you some new loyal followers, but also some people who only came by that once. So, I think you're doing fine, and I think your blog is awesome! I am one of those people who stayed to read more, and I'm sure you're going to get more of those people. Your recipes are very innovative, and I don't really read anything like them in other places, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time before things pick up again.

Hi Kelly, I'm a new ish reader, but if you'd like me to answer you question I might have a little idea. Before this post you wrote three seperate blog posts about Bananas Foster. Now, I know you were just showing us variety, and I really liked to see the ways you could use the recipes, but it felt a bit redundant for me to comment on all three. If they had been more spaced out, I think that would have been better, rather than posting them one after the other. Just a thought, love your blog, I visit every day :)

Thank you SO much for sharing your idea! I think you are completely right. I am not quite sure what I was thinking by being so repetitive (on a banana kick, much?), and I bet commeting would have seemed redundant. I appreciate you honesty and frienship so much, Holly. ;)

World's Healthiest Cupcake- I was really excited to make these and I did. They were easy to make. I added pecans and millet for texture and followed youe recipe as instructed. OMG I was very disappointed in the outcome. They were horrible! I ate 2 just to make sure I didn't miss something after eating the first one. I even made the "glaze" with the leftover batter. I was not a fan of the dry texture of the muffin or lack of flavor. I would not recommend these muffins to anyone or make them again.

Hi Carrie! First off, thank you so much for making these, and I am SO sorry you did't like them. I know how frustrating it is to make a recipe with your valuable time and ingredients only to not have it work, so I truly am sorry. There are only two taste testers in my house (my mother and myself), so recipes I test make the cut based only on our testebuds (which are pretty adjusted to "healthy" desserts). I personaly love these cupcakes (I've been happily snacking on one almost everyday), which is why I posted them. I would NEVER post something I didn't love, solely becuase I think you deserve the best. I really am very sorry, and hope you haven't lost complete faith in me. Thank you so much for reading, Carrie, and I hope you have a lovely day!
