Why Blog, Anyway? (And a Giveaway)

Filed Under: About, Giveaway, Product Review

By Kelly M 49 Comments Jump to Recipe

Why do you blog?

In case you haven’t noticed, I like to comment on people’s blogs.

When I blog, I love comments because they make me feel appreciated, and that when I write, someone is listening. Every comment I get is like a very, very precious gift, and I try to respond to every one. If you’ve ever commented on my blog, thank you.

I also love to comment onther people’s blogs because I figure they feel the same way I do. I love to make people, especially bloggers, feel appreciated, because I know how hard they work and I really do appreciate them. And if I am the only one to comment on a given post, then all the more reason I want to make that person feel like they’re being heard when they write.

That’s only fair.

I do comment on a lot of blogs usually, but sometimes that’s the only comment I may ever leave on that blog. Ever.

That is certainly not always the case. There are plenty of you that are here beause we’re friends. I comment on your blog, you comment on mine, I go back to yours, etc. I have met some amazing people that way.

If you’ve ever stumbled upon a random blog, comment, and leave, why don’t you come back? Why don’t you remember that blog? Why don’t you become a regular reader?

It may have nothing to do with that blog. I don’t write down the posts I comment on, do you? Are you supposed remember every comment on every blog you’ve ever left? Of course not!

But if someone does stumble on your blog, you want them to remember you.

So sometimes when I comment on a blog and don’t return, it’s because I didn’t really understand what that blog was about. Do you ever feel that? You read a blog, but you don’t really sense a theme. Everything’s kinda all over the place. There’s no order.

So when I was thinking about this the other day, I thought:

Could that be my blog with no order? What is my blog about, anyway? What’s my theme?

So when I was done bombarding myself with questions, I realized a few things.

Last night, I went over to an old friend’s house whom I went to Italy with a few years ago, and we made homemade Itlaian pasta together with fresh pesto. We talked about all the memories we’ve had with food, and enjoyed one of the most delicious meals I’ve ever had. But the thing that made it the most delicious was that we all ate it together.

We made new memories, while celebrating old ones. That’s what makes food special.

That meatloaf your grandma used to make on Sundays may not have been 5 stars, but what made it special are the memories behind it. And that’s what I want to blog about!

Healthy food and the people that make it special.

But there is one more component that, had I not realized it, I would have ended this blog today. One very, very important group of people that make my food special is YOU. My readers. But listen to me very carefully:

I DON’T LIKE THE TERM “READERS!” IT’S TOO VAGUE!!!!!

Sorry for the large font, but I feel passionatley about this. YOu are taking your very precious time to read what I write. You are here today listening to me ramble on when there are millions of other things you could be doing. You are not some random “reader.”

You are my friend.

I would invite you over to make healthy food with me in a heartbeat. You rock. But since you may live halfway across the world, I am inviting you over by the power of the blogosphere.

I want my blog posts to be like family gatherings. You are my friends, and my friends are my family.

One more thing. I have never said how old I am on this blog! When I went to Foodbuzz, people couldn’t guess me age. Can you?

Here is a pic of me. Try to guess my age, and the four closest people will win a set of products from NuNutaturals ( (1) ONE box of our NuStevia Packets,  50 ct. Box, AND (1) ONE bottle of our NuNaturals Vanilla Stevia Liquid, 2 oz. bottle.)! To enter the giveaway, I would also love it if you could tell me what you think of this blog’s new direction. Thanks!

I considered doing a porduct review for NuNaturals, but saw no point in it. I know their porducts are amazing, you know their products are amazing, so you don’t really need to hear it again, do you? Now you can even find out for yourself!

By the way, I did recieve free sample from NuNaturals, and this giveaway is only for continental U.S. residents only. Sorry!

Enjoy!

-Kelly M.

P.S. If you know me in real life or from Foodbuzz, do not say how old I am. You already know. That doesn’t count.

I blog because it's an outlet for me. I have really bad anxiety and I suffer from some cognitive distortions so blogging about the positivity makes me really focus on what's going on in my life that's worth smiling about. And it also means I find things to smile about. Plus, I'm kind of discovering myself on the whole gym, healthy lifestyle thing and it's nice to create a community of people I admire and follow and can chat with about it! I live in Australia so I'm out of this but can I still guess? Yes? Ummm, 27 :-)

This comment made me smile. ;) You're story sounds kinda like mine! The heathy living blog world is filled with so many wonderful people (like you!) and it's so great to talk with them. I'm just becoming a runner, and without the blog I'm not sure I would have! Cheers to healthy living! P.S. You're in Australia? How did I miss that? That's so cool!

Exactly! :D I feel inspired by so many people in this community and it's definitely nice to chat with them about starting out :-) Yep! In the most isolated city in the world, Perth :-) I love it. Perth is awesome and living in Australia is pretty cool. My husband and I travel a lot and I'm yet to find somewhere I love more than home (though Paris comes a close second!) Cheers to healthy living indeed!

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and commenting - this post is so true, you do feel appreciated and I love every comment (especially on such a quiet day like today in the blogger-verse lol) - I'm in Canada so I can't enter the giveaway, but I love NuNaturals, I did a giveaway of their stuff myself a little while ago and have some leftovers! So yes I can't enter but just for fun I will still hazard a guess at your age...how about 23?

I can't guess age for my life... but I'm gonna go with 22. I could be totally off.. I guess only you would know!! I love this post and I can totally relate to how you feel. I feel like my blog is mostly a place for me to ramble about food and running, but when I feel like it I talk about other things too, so it's sort of a life in general blog. I'm really glad you commented on my blog because I really like yours and added it to my google reader right away!

I loved this post. I love comments, I love having people actually care what I post and write about everyday. I have to say when I find a blog that I like and I comment on it....if that person doesn't find the time time to write back it rubs me the wrong way! I try very hard to respond to most of my comments OR visit the commenter's blog in return! I feel likes there is an unwritten rule of blog etiquette.... Maybe I care way too much haha?.... Anyways your age... I think you are probably older than you look. You look VERY young. But I think you are probably right around my age.... 27????

But sometime I get too caught up on the comments and lose focus on why I love blogging in the first place. I blog because I want to and I enjoy it. I hope you had a great thanksgiving! Oh, and I will guess that you are 22 too. You look pretty young (in a good way of course). :)

I know that's not too dwarf-like, but I was always that really tall kid, but now I'm just average height. Darn. ;) Do you really think I should post about my running? As I do know your age I shan't say, but needless to say I'm cracking up at some of the guesses. It's lovely you feel so close to your readers! I'm the same way. Heh, most times I read a blog and don't come back is frankly because it bored the hell out of me. I read blogs about things I'm not super interested in (like veganism *dodges tofu cubes*) but good writing and interesting posts are special indeed.

My gut instinct is 24. I'm going with it. I do the same thing with leaving random comments. I know a lot of people do it, so I try to check out the blog of everyone who leaves me a comment, but sometimes if I just don't like the blog. And I'm really bad about commenting in a timely manner these days. I can't comment from work anymore and it slows me WAAAAY down.

Um, I love this post! I think it's a really good point and definitely something important to think about, whether you've been blogging for a month, a year or 5 years (yikes!). I started blogging as a way to keep myself accountable for keeping the weight off that I had already lost, then discovered a huge passion for food and cooking and started to love sharing the recipes and experiences I have had. I find that my favorite part is sharing something delicious that I've made recently. However, funnily enough this worked against me a bit so now I am going back to my original reason for blogging and modifying it a bit to fit in the "I love cooking and good food" bit with the "I need to keep the weight off" bit. But, really, I think the reason why blogging rocks is because it's a beautiful, evolving journey for all of us. And I also blog because I love connecting with other people, aka commenting on their blogs and having them comment back on mine! It's a wonderful community. P.S. I feel like your photo is a trick question! You don't look a day over 20, which probably means you're 40.. just kidding! I'm gonna go with 25, because I'm 25 and everyone should be 25 and never ever older or younger. (ahem, is my quarter-life crisis showing much?)

I'd guess fourteen? Ish? You look pretty young, but most bloggers seem to be in their late teens/early 20s, which is why I'm a bit reluctant. Aaaand you're a good writer, are pretty darn mature, and take good photographs. So I'm probs not going to win, you're probably just really young looking. :) It's okay, people tell me I look young all the time, too! What makes me come back to a blog is if I feel a connection with the blogger - if they make me root for them, or something about them captures my attention. If they feel genuine, if they offer fabulous recipes, if they have fun giveaways, or if their fashion is the shizz (a girl's gotta have her fashion). Anyway, I'm livinglearningeating (AT) googlemail (DOT) com, in case I'm closer than the others! Will you spill what your actual age is after? I want to know how wrong I was...
